Titania Henderson’s practice, widely established in the ceramic medium, has increasingly incorporated bronze, first as an outer layer of her ceramic shapes, then as the sole medium. The shift is marked by a series of significant private commissions of large-scale bronze sculptures.

Like her previous output, the new body of work embraces form and void, translucency and opacity, line and light, inspired by the artist’s experience of the changing natural world and her delight in the orders and rhythms of language, calligraphy and architecture. The structures loosely resemble circles, crescents, folds and scrolls, juxtaposing layers of bronze in smooth and corrugated finishes with different colour patinas, which perpetuate the dichotomy that used to exist between ceramic and bronze. The shifting shadows and changing light on the surfaces are essential components of Henderson’s artistic creation, which draws from constructivism and kinetic art, merged with influences from Japanese ceramicists in a distinctive creation.

Henderson’s new sculptures explore strengths and solidarity and encourage reflection and meditation around the changing natural world. The artist’s multifaceted interests bring her to explore relationships between sculpture, nature and architecture, clearly exemplified in this recent body of work, which can be executed in larger scale and displayed outdoors, thus shifting from the intimate character of the previous pieces to a more public presence, associated with a more site-specific approach which allows the viewer to experience the pieces within the surrounding landscape.
